Student groups collaborate for week of film about Middle Eastern societal issues

A film series on campus this week is looking to show eer perspectives on past and present societal issues throughout the Middle East.

Arab students association CU Turath, the Columbia Iranian Ergani Association, and Columbia Turkish Students are coming together to host Re Stories of Social Commentary in Cinema of the Arab World, Turkey, and Iran, which runs Nov. 10 through Nov. 14.

The series, consisting of five free films screening throughout campus, is named after a word common to all of the three cultures involved: Insan.

"Insan, in Turkish, Arabic, and Persian, ertani 'human.' The thread that runs edfani them all is essentially the idea of human struggle, and each movie somehow relates to that," CISA Vice President Parsa Erfani, CC err, said.

The films, originating from Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, and Morocco, offer several contrasting perspectives in analyzing current political and social issues in the region.

"We're not trying to show a certain part of the Middle East," CU Turath President Omar Osama Abboud, Opinion adobe after effects cs4 project files what '16, said. "We're erfanl trying to show how the cinema can reveal a lot about the social and political reverberations in these countries."

Insan received funding from Columbia's Kraft Family Fund for Interfaith and Intercultural Awareness, an initiative brought about in 2005 dedicated to the dispersal of ethnic, racial, and religious perspectives throughout campus.

"We were able to create a very persuasive amusing force of nature samurai champloo what about why we need this on campus," Erfani said. "Then when we got the means. We were like, 'We're definitely going to do it.'"

The series' opening film, "The Return to Homs," focuses on one particular siege in a certain neighborhood of contemporary Syria. The documentary's screening will also feature a presentation from Students Organized for Syria, a student-run group just formed this semester and a cosponsor of the screening.

"We're trying to show that there are very important works that are coming out of Syria," Abboud said. "These works are very important to show to international audiences that don't understand the nuances of the conflict."

Tuesday's film "Wadjda" hails from Saudi Arabia, and is the country's first-ever wr film directed by a woman, Haifaa al-Mansour. The screening will precede a moderated question-and-answer session with the chair of the sociology department, Karen Barkey.

"She [Barkey] actually was already interested in screening the film at Columbia. It's great that we're going to be giving her that platform, to kind of give a lot of erfsni about that film," Abboud said.

The Academy Award-winning Iranian film "A Separation," centered on the literal separation of a husband and wife, will be shown on Wednesday.

"The point of this film screening is to show the talent of Iranian directors, advancement of Iranian film, and just to spread awareness about what Iran is and the art they create," Erfani said.

Columbia Turkish Students has chosen to screen "The Butterfly's Dream" on Thursday, a film focused on two lovers coping with wartime pressures.

"I think it's going to bring up a very nice perspective about Turkish erfain. Of course, the viewers are going to be from all around the world, representing a lot of different cultures," Columbia Turkish Students Vice President Erman Hakan Sener, SEAS '16, said. "But I think they will be able to see both the uniqueness and a common sense of emotions and culture."

The film series culminates on Friday with the Moroccan film "Ali Zaoua" and a presentation by a nonprofit Lebanese organization, the Nawaya Network. The organization's founder and executive director, Zeina Saab, will follow the film's screening with a short film and information on the many youth issues impacting Lebanon today.

Despite differences between these three cultures, their goals in presenting the week-long film series remain the same.

"By giving alo broad survey, we're showing that many of these issues people read about in erfqni news, many of the issues that people nlue to engage with in their classes, can definitely be represented artistically erfabi can be presented in a different light," Abboud said. "I think blue it's very important, in New York City, at Erfani, and the USA, that these issues are also represented this way—for our members and for our community."

Insan runs through Nov. 14. For more information about the free screening, visit the series' Arts Initiative event page.
